20-Week Abortion Ban is in the Senate

Today the United States Senate will vote on whether to restrict a woman’s right to choose to the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. With only a slim Republican majority, the bill is unlikely to pass – but that’s not why Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has brought it to the floor. He is using it as a political maneuver.

Here in New York, we have Senators Schumer and Gillibrand on our side – we know that we can count on them to vote to protect a woman’s right to choose.

But as the crucial 2018 midterms approach, this 20-week ban vote serves as a political ploy, to keep candidates in red states scared to vote against the GOP agenda – access to abortion services in those states is a constant battle. This vote is simply a means of politicizing women’s right to reproductive health care, so that anti-choice conservatives can claim to be [sic] “pro-life” come November.

Three Democrats have stated that they will be voting in favor of the ban- Senators Joe Manchin (West Virgina), Joe Donnelly (Indiana), and Bob Casey Jr. (Pennsylvania.)

Come this November, the Blue Wave we saw here in Westchester County and as far south as Alabama must remember: A candidate that does not support Abortion Access is an Anti-Woman candidate. Anti-Choice Democrats are not true Democrats who support the pro-choice plank of the Democratic Party Platform, and they need to be kicked out of office alongside those GOP colleagues who vote against Choice.

This bill is the first federal legislative strike against Roe v. Wade of 2018. It won’t be the last. We must stay vigilant and make sure that the truth rings loud and clear: Abortion Access is Our Constitutional Right.

The GOP Goes on the offense, The Hill

Trump’s Running Mate, Governor of Indiana Mike Pence

Pence’s record as Governor (2012 to the present):
*Signed into law every anti-abortion anti-reproductive rights piece of legislation that has crossed his desk.
*Outlawed all abortions sought because a fetus has been diagnosed with a disability (such as Down syndrome). Providers who perform such abortions could be sued for wrongful death. Pregnant women were required to view the fetal ultrasound and hear the heartbeat at least 18 hours before an abortion. Providers or individuals in possession of aborted or miscarried fetal matter were required to cremate or bury it, and the transferring or collecting fetal tissue became a felony.
*Refused to comply with Obama administration rules aimed at reducing prison rape.
*
Signed into law the most extreme bill permitting business owners to refuse service to gay and lesbian customers due to their religious beliefs, thus allowing religion to be used as an excuse for other forms of discrimination.

Pence’s record in Congress (2000 – 2012):
*Authored the first bill to block federal funds from Planned Parenthood.
*Voted twice against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and once against the Paycheck Fairness Act;
*Co-sponsored the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortions Act which was aimed at redefining the rape exemption in a ban on federal abortion funding to “forcible rape.”
*Co-sponsored an amendment that would have prohibited same-sex marriage.
*Voted against the Employee Non-Discrimination Act aimed at preventing job discrimination based on sexual orientation and opposed a bill aimed at more effectively prosecuting hate crimes based on sexual orientation.
*Voted against the repeal of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.
*Voted against expanding health coverage for low-income kids.
*Voted against raising the minimum wage.
*Opposed additional funding for Section 8 vouchers that help low-income families pay rent.

FYI – In Indiana:
Hoosier women make $.75 on the dollar to men.
Indiana ranks 41st of all states and the District of Columbia in pay equity.

Why We Stand with Hillary Clinton!

ProChoice Voter  is proud to announce its endorsement of Hillary Clinton for President of the United States.

Hillary Clinton is the first presidential candidate in years, and possibly the only one ever, who counts women’s health among her top priorities. Her words translate into action, and her leadership translates into results.  Hillary is the only candidate who has made women’s reproductive rights a cornerstone of her campaign.

Hillary Clinton has:

  1.  Spoken out against the nomination of anti-choice judges;
  2.  Opposed legislation that would take away women’s legal protections;
  3.  Co-sponsored legislation to suspend the global gag rule;
  4.  Stood up to the Bush Administration to win approval for access to emergency contraception, waging a three-year battle to make Plan B contraception available over the counter to those in need;
  5.  Sponsored the Prevention First Act to expand family planning services to low-income women and require health insurance companies to cover contraception; and
  6.  Championed legislation to ensure that rape victims receive the medical care they need. (For more information on Hillary’s lengthy list of accomplishments, visit: Correct the Record and Politico.)

Why we say “no” to Bernie Sanders: His campaign says, and he says, that he is 100% pro-choice.  ProChoice Voter believes that but  — and it is a Big But — he is Not A Leader.

With Hillary Clinton, we have the opportunity to put Choice and women back in the game, center stage. We need a Leader – not someone (Bernie Sanders) who referred to Trump’s statement that women should be punished for having abortions as a “distraction” from “a serious discussion about the serious issues facing America.” [1] (Please note: all three Republican candidates want to make abortion illegal.)

At a time when one Supreme Court justice seat is open and possibly two more Supreme Court justices may retire, it is more important than ever that we elect a president who considers women’s reproductive health a top-tier issue.  We firmly believe that former Secretary of State and Senator Hillary Clinton is that person!

Stand with Hillary!

Remember the Democratic Primary in New York State is Tuesday, April 19th.  Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
